The Letters of

Arthur Machen to

Alfred F. Goldsmith

1922-1946

Edited by Sam Kunkel and Felix John Taylor

For nearly a quarter of a century, Arthur Machen exchanged more than a hundred letters with Alfred F. Goldsmith, the New York book-seller, bibliophile and collector. Their correspondence began with Goldsmith’s admiration for the author’s work and developed into a warm and enduring friendship.

Goldsmith’s bookshop, At the Sign of the Sparrow, stood at the heart of New York’s famous Book Row, attracting collectors, writers and dealers. His friendship with Machen began at a time when the efforts of Starrett, Cabell and Van Vechten meant that the author’s books were being reissued and read by a new American audience, and Goldsmith remained a sympathetic friend during the later years of Machen’s increasing financial difficulties. Their letters range from discussions of books, publishing and sales to family news, politics and the gathering crisis of the 1930s and 1940s.

They also reveal the more private side of Machen: his anxieties over money, his political convictions, his delight in friend¬ship, and his anguish when his son Hilary was reported missing during the Second World War. Together, these letters illuminate the later life of one of Britain’s most interesting writers.
