R.R. Ryan
has gained a cult following in recent years as the author of 11
thriller novels published by Herbert Jenkins between 1936-1940. He
is known to have published 11 novels, 7 as R.R. Ryan, 3 as Cameron
Carr, and 1 as John Galton. Several of the novels have grotesque
or bizarre elements, but only one, Echo of a
Curse, is
ostensibly supernatural.
Up until
recently no biographical details about R.R. Ryan were known, and
most commentators surmised that the author was a woman, largely on
the basis of the British Library catalogue, which ascribes
authorship to Rachel R. Ryan. Recent research has found that R.R.
Ryan was the nom de plume of Rex Ryan, itself a psuedonym used by
Evelyn Bradley, a theatrical manager who was born in Waterloo,
Lancashire, in 1883, and who lived much of his adult life in Hove,
Sussex. He took his own life in October 1950.
